NERCT 2015 – Training Program Review

In 2015, the world continued to experience the spill-over effects of the conflicts that started at the beginning of the century. The wars waged in Syria, Iraq, Ukraine, Libya, Yemen or South Sudan are dictated by outside elements. Terrorism, fully embodied by the far-reaching tentacles of the Islamic State has made its presence felt on every continent, but especially in France, Mali, the Horn of Africa, the Middle-East and Nigeria. The dangers we face are everywhere, furtive and seemingly ready to strike at any time. Few countries in the world understand this better than Nigeria. The violence of Boko Haram – now known as Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) – has reached unmatched levels of violence, scope and support, leaving thousands of Nigerians dead and even more injured in 2015 alone.

It is in this unfortunate context that the Nigeria Emergency Response and Counter-Terrorism Workshop (NERCT) finds its purpose. The training program, which was held on the 3rd and 4th of December, 2015 prepared security and management personnel who deal with these threats daily. It focused on how to improve security in the workplace, notably through improved intelligence, a better understanding of the threat of terrorism, risk assessment and professionalism.

This event would not have been possible without the strong support from our partners Puzzles Group Inc, Nigerian Ports Authority and our returning partner, Niger Insurance PLC. We wish to thank all of you for your support, participation and your dedication to Nigeria’s safety. We would also like to thank the participants individually, who presented the trainers with insightful questions, comments and feedback during and after the workshop and we are already looking forward to NERCT 2016.
